Study programme Occupational Safety Engineering
Occupational Safety Engineering is an interdisciplinary degree programme delivered jointly by academic and research staff representing four faculties of Lodz University of Technology: the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering, the Faculty of Organization and Management, the Faculty of Textiles and Design, and the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering. Graduates of the programme are prepared for professional activity in the fields of occupational health and safety (OHS) and process safety within industrial enterprises, technical supervision authorities, and public administration institutions. They acquire competencies enabling them to:
perform the duties of occupational health and safety services in accordance with applicable legal regulations;
conduct occupational, process, and explosion risk analyses and assessments;
design and monitor technical working conditions, as well as assess the compliance of machinery and industrial installations with safety requirements;
design workplaces in accordance with ergonomic principles, taking into account the needs of persons with special requirements;
investigate the circumstances and root causes of industrial failures, occupational accidents, and occupational diseases;
supervise compliance with safety standards and occupational health and safety regulations;
implement and continuously improve integrated management systems related to occupational safety, quality, and environmental protection, including performing the role of an internal auditor;
conduct OHS training activities and maintain occupational safety documentation;
participate in activities related to process risk management, industrial safety, and crisis management;
select personal and collective protective equipment appropriate to identified hazards;
undertake activities within the scope of pre-medical first aid.
The curriculum addresses contemporary challenges associated with occupational and process safety in the context of industrial automation and digitalisation, including issues related to the cybersecurity of industrial infrastructure, as well as solutions supporting the green transition and sustainable development.
Courses are delivered by specialised academic staff actively cooperating with industry in the implementation of research and industrial deployment projects, as well as by practitioners representing the OHS sector, occupational supervision authorities, and scientific and research institutions, including the National Labour Inspectorate, the State Fire Service, and the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine.
Students have the opportunity to obtain certificates confirming additional professional qualifications and to participate in projects conducted in cooperation with socio-economic stakeholders.
The Occupational Safety Engineering degree programme was distinguished by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education in the 2012 competition “One Million for the Best Study Programmes.” The programme also received the “Innovation Laurel” and “Studies with a Future” awards, granted to the most innovative and modern degree programmes in Poland. The programme holds a positive accreditation granted by the Polish Accreditation Committee valid until the 2028/2029 academic year.
